Doctor Who Toyfair 2012

Bifbangpow gave Whovians 3 reasons to get excited over this toyfair with the announcement of more villains, more companions and more Doctors for 2012. After the jump we'll go through what makes us giddy...

Reason #1- DALEKS! Look at that "Genesis" era beauty standing there and just think of the possibilities. BBP has been playing a lot with sound chips these days, ohpleasepleasepleaseplease have one.

(I'll still buy one without it though)

Reason #2- More Hinchcliffe era baddies, this looks like it might be a two pack from "Talons of Weng Chiang" and includes everybodies favourite homunculus Mr Sin.

Reason #3- MORE DOCTORS! Apparantly part of an SDCC two pack Doctor #1 will be debuting this year. It is not known what the second figure will be at this point. Next to him is Kraal (from the Android Invasion) and the announcement that he will be paired with Magnus Greel (not shown).

Bifbangpow Field Major Styre Review

Sontarans are not my favourite Who villains by any stretch but considering they were the third baddy the fourth Doctor faced combined with how amendable they are to the Mego style, Styre was a natural fit. He's also a joy as I'll point out after the jump..

My only complaint is the body on mine was wound too tight making posing difficult, this is something I can and will fix so it's not Earth shattering. It's probably an isolated incident as well.

Styre's outfit is the best of the series and that's saying a lot. Whatever material they used for this is just terrific and show accurate. The belt looked odd at first but then I looked at the episode again and the character kind of wears it low, so it's accurate.

Re purposed Mego Super Knights boots are used here and they work perfectly.

A close up of ol' Potato face, when I first got him I thought the pigment was off a little but screen caps prove that it's darn close. Part of me wants to add a little dry brush to provide some of the texture to the face and the other part of me thinks "This is exactly how a Sontaran doll would have looked in the 70s". The 70s kid in me wins the argument.

In addition to his helmet, Styre comes with a pistol and his remote control device (which fell to the floor while I was shooting this), they are both show accurate and the figure can hold them .

I've heard some complaints that Styre has five fingers, that's because he had five fingers on the show. Seriously check it out here, he is the only Sontaran on the series to have regular hands. That's also why he doesn't carry that little wand they used

All in all, if this is what Bifbangpow has to offer, I'm very excited about the future. This line has exceeded my expectations in terms of quality and I'm automatically on board for every character they have to offer.

Bifbangpow The Master Photo Review

When the Bifbangpow! Who line was first announced, the one character that fans didn't seem enthusiastic about was the Master. Not that he isn't a great villain, it's probably because more folks prefer it to be the likeness of either actors Roger Delgado or Anthony Ainley.

To defend the character choice, the Peter Pratt version of the Master is the "Mego era" rendition of the character and the one that the Tom Baker Doctor faced the most.

Fans also worried when the original prototype was shown, however I'm happy to report that BifBangPow really poured on the quality here and it's a crazy nice piece. More photos after the jump:

The first thing I noticed was the quality of the cloak, it's a nice thick material that works. Even though the Master is wearing it down to the ground with boots, BBP made sure he's also got some tights on, a nice touch.

Like all of the BBP DW line, the Master comes with an accessory, in this case a staff (I need to rewatch "Deadly Assasin" to tell me the signifigance of it again). It's something that they could have gotten away without doing, so kudos to them.

FYI the figure does not come with a tissue compressed Tom Baker, I put that there as a gag. It's from the late nineties Bluebird toys set.

Another cool point about the cloak is the hood has wire in it, enabling you to mold it into any shape you want. I really like this detail and certainly wasn't expecting it.

A good shot of the Master's head sculpt, I think it's actually more detailed than the Peter Pratt makeup was. I plan on buying a second so I can finally make a "Darkman" custom figure.

While I'll still be the first guy to order an 8' version of Roger Delgado, I'm happy I got this guy.

Bifbangpow Cyber Leader Photo Review

Perhaps the figure I most looked forward to is the Cyber Leader from "Revenge of the Cyberman". You can keep your JNT era look, this has always been the ultimate design for me.

It is a look that has also been somewhat under served in terms of merchandise. Product Enterprises never got their 1/6th scale version to market, so I was overjoyed to see this guy in the second wave of BifBangPow Doctor Who. More photos after the jump:

The first thing is, they nailed the suit right down to the pseudo bell bottoms (hey it was 1974) this version was wearing. The more I played with this guy, the more I was in awe of that. Should BBP release a regular Cyberman (which I think is probably a given) I will buy a few as an army builder.

The head sculpt evokes a retro quality while being very detailed, they corrected the mistake made by Denys Fisher and didn't include a nose. The only quibble here being that there is a slight gap between the suit and the neck plug. A tiny placement of foam or tissue along the shoulders is an easy fix but be careful when handling the chest piece, it's glued on and will come off if you manhandle it. Luckily if that does happen, model cement fixes seems to provide a perfect fix.

Like all of the BifBangPow Who series, the Cyberleader comes with an accessory, this time it's a Cybermat. A nice little "Gimme" that is totally relevant to the story he appeared in.

I whole heartily recommend this figure.

The Doctor is in.....my house

Less than a week after New York Comic Con my parcel from Entertainment Earth has arrived containing the four figures I most looked forward to in 2011. There will be more photos to follow today but I wanted to dedicate this post to the most important figure, the mego era Doctor himself.

The figure itself is joyous and BBP smartly avoided a grinning Doctor (although I guess that leaves room for a future variant) and instead used the grim visage seen in the show's opening credits. His hair gives the appearance of a large head but it's really show accurate.

The figure comes with a hat but I'm sad to report it just doesn't work. Mego fans will likely be able to create a work around or use the hat for Indiana Jones customs.

The figure comes with a beautiful rendition of the Sonic screwdriver, harkening back to the Denys Fisher line.

One thing I noticed from the back of the card is that these puppies are limited to 3,000 each, so if you're sitting on the fence about these this might be a motivator.

Wave 2 will give us Megoheads and Doctor Who Collectors in general something they are generally lacking, figures of the companions starting with Leela.

This is a great throwback to Mego history seeing as Leela was the first Who companion to get an action figure way back in 1977. Could Sarah Jane be far behind? How about a Romana two pack? We live in exciting times Mego-Who-Heads!

The Fourth Doctor

The first Doctor in the Bif Bang Pow series of Doctor Who figures (and hopefully not the last) is fan favourite fourth Doctor, Tom Baker. He comes adorned in his early garb, complete with trademark scarf, sonic screwdriver and fedora.

The Master

The Peter Pratt version of the Master from the "Deadly Asassin" is in the first wave of Bif Bang Pow Doctor Who figures and rightfully so, this version of the Master tangled with the fourth Doctor on two different occasions. Could a Roger Delgado Master be in the works? One can only hope!

Like all of these figures, the final release is subject to change based on licensor approval.

Field Major Styre the Sontaran

BifBangPow! has revealed shots of their second figure in the new Doctor Who Series, this being Field Major Styre from the episode "The Sontaran Experiment". The five fingered Styre comes with his blaster and the patented Sontaran Helmet which is of course, removable.

Kitbash Who?: The Second Doctor

Steve (Azrak) has provided us with yet another groovy kit bash recipe to round out your cast of characters, this time it's the cosmic hobo himself, the second Doctor. You'll have to sculpt your own recorder however, more after the jump:

A very simple recipe:

8" body
CTVT Brown blazer, white dress shirt, necktie, and head
Exclusive Premiere George Burns pants
Doc Mego footwear
Polyester wig
Black RIT dye

The pants are from a nine inch figure, but there be method to my madness. As I was researching Troughton's look, I came across a piece that said his early outfits were very baggy, and were gradually taken in as the show progressed. I went for that look since I had the EP pants, but really any light neutral plaid would work equally well. I chose the Galahad head because it has sharp features - close enough given the goal of making these with easily attainable parts. I chose to dye the brown blazer after removing the buttons in order to darken it but still have it look unique next to the Hartnell already completed.

Next up, one of my favorites, kickass Jon Pertwee.

Kitbash Who? : The Brigadier

Kitbash Who? : The First Doctor

It's likely going to be a long while before BifBangPow gets to the Hartnell years, so here's a quick and inexpensive recipe by our own Steve Moore to get the first Doctor on the scene.

- Doc Mego gray suit
CTVT black tux
CTVT black pointed shoes
CTVT Raan from Space 1999
CTVT Devil staff
CTVT ‘old man’ head
Thick black string or very thin fabric strip Favorite thrift store scarf fabric

Tools

Black Sharpie
Sharp scissors
Wire cutters
Needle and black thread (or sewing machine)

Our first installment of ‘Kitbash Who?’ is fittingly the first Doctor, William Hartnell. There is one difficult portion of this project that takes a little finesse, and that is the hat/hair combo repurposed from the Raan figure. The hat must be turned inside-out as shown, and resized with a new seam either stitched by hand or machine. The excess then must be trimmed, the hat turned right side-out, and then carefully colored with a black Sharpie. Lastly, the silver hair needs trimmed as pictured.

Otherwise, this is straight-up dolly dressing with a nice payoff. The staff requires two snips with the wire cutters to transform to a cane. Cut it longer at first, then make a final cut to the correct length. I did the hat first, then dressed the figure, and put the hat on as the last step.

Notes: The buttons on the CTVT shirt that comes with the tux are amazingly functional. There are tiny button holes sewn in the shirt.

However, mine needed an extra stitch as my fat fingers could not get them buttoned without pulling them loose. I ended up leaving the bottom button off as it gets tucked anyway. The Molson cap is not to show scale, but rather to show that I needed a drink after wrestling with those two tiny buttons.

Also be careful of the Sharpie. It takes a couple of passes/coats, and you need to let them dry fully before handling the hat. I put it on an old Supes head while I colored it.

And there you have it, now all you need is a tiny version of the Trotter's lane junkyard. Got a Who Kitbash you'd like to share? Drop us a line!

Dalek by Proxy

While it's very likely that a Dalek(s) figure is in the works over at Bif Bang Pow, if you can't wait (like me) there is a kind of an affordable fix available in the UK. In 1975, Palitoy released this talking Dalek toy (seen above) which blends in very well in the 8" set. It's a touch shorter than it probably should be but as you can see Brock has his hands full. If you don't care about a broken talk function you can usually get one for under $30, the one i have cost around $26.

The Palitoy Dalek was however, not made by Mego but by Japanese toy maker Tomy. Mego made one for Denys Fisher which is hard to find in any condition, it is a little more show accurate but will likely set you back $200 or more.

A Short "Who's Who" of Wave 1

I'm reading some confusion online about some of the character shoices for the series and with a series with a long and confusing history like Doctor Who it's understandable, so I thought it might be useful to provide some insight as to why those are suitable choices for the time.

One: The Doctor as portrayed by Tom Baker

I can't imagine anybody not recognizing him, yet knowing what Doctor Who is but wave 1 of the new Bif Bang Pow figures starts at his era and only his era. Unlike Character Options, who seem to move around the show's history between waves (which is fine), BBP is sticking to Tom for this wave and that's just dandy.

This is a first Season Tom, the head sculpt seems to emulating the haunting look of the credits and thank God he isn't smiling.

Two: Field Major Styre portrayed by Kevin Lindsay

Styre was the villain in the fourth Doctor's third adventure "The Sontaran Experiment". There is some interesting trivia here, Styre is the only Sontaran to be shown with four fingers (all the others had two) and he's the only one to brandish a pistol. So when you see him in the stores (hopefully soon) he is not a glitch, he is screen accurate.

The Sontarans menaced the fourth Doctor twice, which is two times more than any other Doctor. They're also clones, so Styre is an army builder of sorts.

Three : The Master played by Peter Pratt

This is the figure that seems to cause the most confusion by the mego community as many see it as an odd choice but it's actually quite appropriate.

While most casual fans would expect Roger Delgado as the Master, he passed away before Baker even took the role and while the fourth doctor did clash with Anthony Ainley's Master, it was his final adventure and that Master absolutely belongs to Peter Davison's fifth Doctor.

The Master of the Baker era was this, a decaying half dead corpse who had used up all his regenerations. I've heard some complaints about the head sculpt but honestly, it's accurate to the make up job. The Doctor tangled with this Master twice and by that, this is the Master for the Baker era.

Four : Cyberleader

"Revenge of the Cyberman" was the fifth adventure of the fourth Doctor's first season, it's not exactly a fan favourite (personally I like it) but it marks the only appearance of the Cybermen in the 1970s.

The best thing about BBP releasing the Cyberleader first is it almost guarentees us a regular Cyberman figure in the future it's just too obvious.

Cybermen are traditionally the second fan favourite villain behind the Daleks, so they are logical choice for wave one.

Doctor Who : Wave 1

Before you say it: Yes, Bif Bang Pow knows Tom's head is a little big, it won't be on the final figure. It's all part of the Mego making process.

Toys for an Unearthly Child

We might as well start at the beginning, Mego never brought these figures to America where the character was then barely known, but lucky UK children were treated to one of the coolest toy lines of the 1970s.
